The shagadelics are Dave Bowman's trip through dimensions and space--a guided tour, if you like, of wonders beyond his normal perceptions--the white room is the space provided for Dave by the alien guides, created from images and memories in Dave's brain, where he lives out the remainder of his mortal days (possibly in just a few moments)--at the moment of his death, the monolith reappears and brings about the next step in Dave's evolution: he becomes the Star Child, the first of his kind, with God-like abilities and a future of new possibilities ahead of him,

If you can find the book, it makes more sense(of course).
At the end of the ape sequence, the ape has learned to use tools and is looking across the vast savannah at his future- the last line of the chapter says something like, "he didn't know what he was going to do-but he would "think" of something"...
The end of the book mirrors that- the "Starchild" "looks out at the vastness of time and space wondering what to do next- but he would "think" of something".
Once again-the monolith has given 'evolution' a nudge.
Sorry-paraphrased-couldn't find my copy of the book. Did this make any more sense?

the monolith that appears is a symbol of the species evolving into a more advanced state.
the apes begin to use tools--monolith
man goes to moon--monolith
monolith in space is man exploring more distant space.
baby is symbolic of birth of new , higher species of man.
IIRC, (it's been a while since i watched movie). old man in white room is symbol of death of old species of man, baby is birth of new species of man.
also, the machines (HAL) evolved too. ** the baby might have been the evolution of machines into self-awareness.** cant remember exactly, probably been 10 years+ since i have seen it.
