The five rings represent the five continents. They are interlaced to show the universality of Olympism and the meeting of the athletes of the whole world during the Olympic Games.
Blue= Europe
Yellow= Asia
Green= Australia
Red= America
Black= Africa
The five colors of the rings blue, black and red (top) and yellow and green (bottom) were chosen since one of these colors can be found in the flag of each competing nation.

They represent the five different types of events: strength, water, etc, etc. They didn't use to be colored but people knew there was one for each event in ancient Greece, which is where we revived and adapted it from. The rings were all gold/brass. Which is probably where the term "grabbing the brass ring" really comes from, and not the 1920's past time of snatching the brass ring from the center of the merry go round to get a prize.

The emblem chosen to illustrate and represent the world Congress of 1914 ...: five intertwined rings in different colours - blue, yellow, black, green, red - are placed on the white field of the paper. These five rings represent the five parts of the world which now are won over to Olympism and willing to accept healthy competition.
