World of Warcraft question!?

when you go to the battlemaster and enter a battle, what goes on during the battles?

Each Battleground has a different objective

Warsong Gulch is a "Capture the Flag" type game, grab the enemy flag and return it to your flag room

Arathi Basin is a "Domination" game where you control nodes which give you points every 5 seconds, first team to 2000 wins

Alteric Valley is a "Campaign" where you are trying to capture a series of locations on the way to killing the enemy general

Once you are in the battleground you enter one of three competitions depending on which ground you enter. Warsong is a capture the flag game, the next is a game where you capture territory to gain points, the third is just about grabbing territory.

When the battle ends, you are teleported back to the town you entered the queue in, next to the head battlemaster for that map. (I have been teleported across continents that way.) If you want to go into another battleground you will have to re-queue, though the wait will usually be short.

You are separated in groups of similar levels, so you won't face someone who you couldn’t hope to scratch. (I.e. 10-19 play together, as do 20-29, 30-39 and so on.)

Battlegrounds are good for two things, getting honor, and getting reward tokens. You can exchange these at the true entrance to the battleground, somewhere on the world map. http://www.worldofwarcraft.com has a complete listing of all the prizes, many of them are VERY good, starting at least epic level and going up from there. (Warsong has a trinket that a level 20 can wear; the next nearest trinket is in the early 40ies! Please note that it will take something like 30 participation tokens, and ~200 honor to get.)
