I was speaking with a friend of mine at work. We were discussing our displeasure with the way that society views good friday. And through some discussion she stated her opinions on MLK day. And with some more discussion I came 2 ask her, Since I'm German, shouldnt i be able 2 have hitlers birthday off. We both laughed b4 she replies u should take that question 2 answers and c what every1 has 2 say about it. So dont go into a tangent, thinking im some sort of nazi radical racist. One of my best friends is not caucasian, and i am. I just am proud of being of german heritage. No not what hitler has done. I just think that i should be able 2 be proud of my family's heritage. So watcha think

I think you have every right to be proud of your German heritage.I also think there might be better examples of Germans to celebrate. There are a few of the holidays we have that I question and others I wish we could have celebrations for also.If we're going to celebrate a person I wish they would look more closely into their character and if they are really worth celebrating.

I argued with a woman once over this. She was a little girl growing up in Germany during WW2 and lived through and saw the Allied bombings.

I argued that, before Hitler launched the war, he took a broken and ruined country and built it back up. That was all I was saying. I stressed the point that he ended up ruining it worse than it had been after World War 1, but he did in fact rebuild his country in the midst of a world wide depression. I offended her greatly and regret it to this day. There are plenty of other Germans to be proud of throughout history (Bach, Beethoven, Daimler, Charlemagne). Hitler is indefensible. By the way, I'm not German. By arguing this with a German who lived through the war, all I was doing was showing how naive I was.

I am 49.9% German, but I don't think it's fair to have Hitler's birthday off. He was a terrible man, even though he's German. That's no reason to be ashamed of our heritage, however. I am very proud of it, as well as I am of my Irish family line. You can celebrate his birthday at home if you wish, but don't ask the boss for a day off.

I am Dutch German and my ancestors were in the ship building business for the slave trade in early 1800's and that doesn't make me a bad person.

Ones behavior to fellow humans is their legacy and I hope people in years from now say I left a good impression and was a good contributor to society.

WOW...that is a lot of question.

Couldn't you find a better IDOL to memorialize? Like, the date the wall came down between e/w germany?
I would hate to give you HITLER day cause then it sounds like they are HONORING him....come up with a real German hero's name and I will go for it.

How about celebrating Germany in some other way instead of celebrating the birth of a monster like hitler?

Hmmmmmmmmm, I agree with Ellie, maybe it would seem that you're celebrating his achievements in his life if you had a holiday on his birthday !! So............. be proud of being German in another way, he was afterall nothing more than a vicious, mudering, racist animal wasn't he?????

be proud of ur family's heritage, but some people will make fun of you for it. There are these guys who call me a yankee b/c my mom was born in Illinois and I wasn't. but they call me that b/c I proclaimed my moms northern heritage. good luck! i've always been interested in Germany. I'll stand beside u if people discriminate. I hate racism.

I think a better German role model would be Martin Luther.
