You must be quite new to integers. Here some strategies to help you out.
1) Think of - numbers as cold and + numbers as hot.
You have a pail of cold water (-5) and you add hot water (+3). Your final result is water that is not as cold as before (-2).
If you don't like thinking of it in those terms there is another way of looking at it.
2) A positive together with a negative cancel each other out: +1 and -1 =0, -3 and +3 together cancel to 0
You have 5 negatives and 3 positives

- +
-
-
The first few cancel out to zero - what you have left is 2 negatives or -2
-5 + 3 = -2
