i am assuming that when you go to partition the hard drive that you can delete the old stuff there during the setup. However I cant get rid of my old partion because it says that I cannot remove this partition because the setup files are on thatt partition. what can I do to remedy this situation?

To completely wipe it out you need to do more. Run dban http://dban.sourceforge.net/ on it first and then reinstall your OS. This a more effective and secure method but it takes longer. This will delete EVERYTHING, there will be nothing left.

Boot your computer using the Windows XP set up disk (or your Recovery Disk). Let it start the Windows install. Right after you do the F8 to agree, you will be offered a chance to format or partition the hard drive. You should be able to do it from there.

You can not do it if you boot from the hard drive because it is using the main partition of the hard drive to boot. You can not delete the partition you are using.

Easiest way is to re-install your OS and choose (format harddrive) during the operation.
If you want to create a partition and if you're not absolutely sure of what you're doing, I'd recommend a program like 'Partition Magic" by Powerquest. I've used it in all my computers, and it works well and easily.

Maybe you should try buying a firewall after you clean it so it wont get viruses on it.
