For my daughter's 2nd grade project, we want to build a model of a local (lenticular truss) bridge. What should we use? I would just use popsicle sticks, but they won't bend to make the four long curved beams. Isn't there a soft wood that is easy to use that I could find at the local craft store?

Balsa wood is quite soft, and sold at many craft stores. Bass wood is similar, but stiffer. Some can even be found at hardware stores and model shops.

What degree of detail is needed in the model? and how big should it be? Since the Verrazzano is a suspension bridge, string or wire will be an important component of the model. If I were doing it I'd consider using Lego™ blocks, but that is because I an weird and have a large collection of them, if you don't allready have them you probably wouldn't want to buy them for this one project.

Not knowing the requirements and size:

There's colored wire in jewelry making.
Pipecleaner.
Modeling clay.
Tear apart swag wreaths, wicker baskets.
Remember that foil and paper ribbon people made baskets out of?

I would wander around a craft shop and get some ideas. I think avoiding popsicle sticks would be a good idea. Even though she's in 2nd grade, it will stand out.

Hi:

Soak the wood in water and gradually bend the wood ,tighten it with a rubber band and keep soaking it and bend it (gradually of course) until it form the shape you want it to be in . Use toothpicks or match stick instead of popscile stick. plastic rods work as well you can heat them up and bend them into shape. Just make sure the plastic that they can done this way.

hope this helps

You could make it out of wicker. When you soak it, it is quite pliable. If it doesn't have to be made out of wood, you could use Styrofoam or foam core board. Since she's only in the 2ND grade, why not make it out of a heavy card stock, that you can get at Staples or Office Depot.

Go to Hirst Arts.com for silicone rubber molds to be used with plaster to make blocks bricks. They have a few bridge molds.
