★★ GET A ROUTER ★★
◙ Software firewalls are not all that effective by themselves. That's because they can only deal with viruses etc after they have made it onto your computer.
◙ The best way to stop these attacks are to use a hardware firewall. This is a router with a builtin firewall.
◙ the router gives hackers a different ip number than the one your computer has. When they are trying to trace you all they get is the ip number of your router.
◙ The firewall inside the router stops viruses etc from ever getting on your computer in the first place and stops hackers from using a port scanner to hack into your computer. Don't get the idea that this is the only way to hack into your computer. But this is the most common way.
◙ As you can see it's good to have a router even if you never intend to network more than on computer.
◙ Also you should get a two-way software firewall like zonealarm. these are handy because of spyware. some programs like real player have spyware built into them. a two-way firewall stops these programs from reporting back to their owners.
◙ Best thing to do is to use both of these firewalls at onetime.
◙ If you have an application that won't work while the firewalls are on DO NOT TURN OFF THE FIREWALLS. Instead go into the exception lists of each firewall and click the program you want to work. now the firewalls will allow the program to work.

The answers you were given are correct. But a firewall should be a part of your security package and it can stop some the majority of invaders. However, the worms, trojans and virus that slip through the net will need to be eliminated. However you can invest in a net shield to allow for better isolation of the viruses before the infect your PC. A net shield is firewall, proxy and digital shredder bundle. is Here is a link to an security suite and firewall page.

Not primarily but it slows down the delivery
Scan in/out traffic with an AV program would be considered normal prevention. There are F/W's that do this called deep packet inspection but they cost thousands and have corporations and technicians supporting them by maintenance contracts(schools, libraries, Governments)
The software firewalls Norton IS, Macafee et all do not perform a deep packet inspection but do a lightweight one.
Hardware firewalls like your Linksys/D-Link routers just hide your network from prying eyes(hackers) through NAT= network Address Translation. The Public IP is all that can be seen by hackers and they cannot enter the Nat because they don't have an established session path originating from the computer side of the router.
You should keep a AV and an Anti-Spy prgram on your comp to scan for the little bugs inserted into emails, web sites, Chat/IM, and any attached file.
The world is full of vultures, vultures everywhere!
AVG 7.5 Free from downloads.com and Windows defender from the Microsoft Download Center are both free and work fairly well. Only have one AV program on your comp at a time as they do not play well in groups.

It can definitely provide some, but not all. A firewall protects you from things that you ARE NOT requesting: the Bots that are constantly trying to hack your computer (usually less than four minutes:
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/computersecurity/hacking/2004-11-30-analysis-and-safeguards_x.htm
But whenever you go to a website or open email, then you are requesting that information, YOU ARE TELLING YOUR FIREWALL TO LET THAT COMPUTER CODE PASS. At that point, a malicious website can throw everything at you including the kitchen sink. Then it falls upon your other security programs to kill the infection. That is why knowledgeable pc security experts talk about "layers" of protection. A firewall is excellent, but by itself is not near enough. Good luck.

A firewall DOESN'T actually block all viruses; nasty malware apps can still break through. Try getting a good Internet Security Suite, such as Norton Internet Security, bitDefender, AVG (NOT THE FREEWARE KIND!!), Spyware Doctor, or (if you're a Mac user like me) use Intego products

A firewall monitors activity between your computer and the Internet. Its main purpose is to prevent people from being able to hack into a computer. While it can prevent some viruses from being able to use your computer to go out to the Internet, that is not its purpose. And it will not block the majority of them at all.
For viruses and spyware you need a good virus scanner and a good spyware scanner.

No a firewall is just protection on your computer that prevents other people and programs from accessing your computer's information unless you allow them. It really helps to prevent hackers (even though they can still break codes). You need something completely different to prevent viruses and such. Try AOL's security services, its free when you get a free email account.

In a small way, yes. A firewall can prevent most trojans from accessing your Internet. But you need dedicated anti-virus software and even anti-spy software.

Not totally, firewall is more for preventing someone from picking up onto your computer signal. You still need one virus protection program and at least two spyware protection programs, to be fully protected.
