I saw this movie many years ago.. It starts with a WW2 soldier coming home, who witnesses a car crash, where a car goes into the water. He dives in to rescue the people, but he drowns as well... Then you see him where ever we go( when we die), and sees his long dead aunt, who has become an artist. There are many, many people there, and he falls in love with a girl who is waiting to return as well... He demands to retrnwhen she does, so they can meet again and continue their relationship. He is born a little boynamed Elmo, I think, and he grows up and does meet the girl again...very good movie, would love to see it again...

i'm not sure that it's the same movie, but this sounds an awful lot like "Whay Dreams May Come". From 1998, starring Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr., Annabella Sciorra, and Max Von Sydow. Perhaps your memory is a little vague, as the film is often surreal, yet consistantly lovely. Try this, i believe it to be your movie.
