Is Portugal A Developed Country

I absolutely love Portugal & have travelled there 2 times for extended holidays. I'm from Australia, so its a long way to travel, but soooo worth it :-)).

Having said that, I think Portugal is a developing country & I think its politics lets it down as has the European council.

I also think it was a mistake to adopt the Euro from the beginning. I was in Lisboa when the change over to Euro's occurred.. ok, not much immediate difference.

BUT, 3 years later... OMG what has happened to the ecomomy? What a bad affect it has had on everyday living, community, traditions & socialising!! I was shocked.. the ecomony is in a shambles, its expensive & the cost of living is unbelievable!! The basic wage has barely risen & people are seriously struggling to make ends meet - and these people were considered semi-wealthy prior to the Euro!!!!!!

One good thing I found was the public transport, excellent regional services, good prices & good facilities. I did all of my travelling by train/bus/metro & I had 2 kids with me (1 baby).

All up, yes Portugal is one of the struggling (a nice way to put it) European countries, but considering the oppression that occured not so long ago in historic terms (1960 - 70's) its come a long way.

I really hope Portugal continues to grow but not at the expense of the wonderful traditions & country pride. Viva Portugal!!!

Portugal is a developed country if you think of what a non-developed or developing country is, definitely. That having been said, the politics in Lisbon, Brussels and Strasbourg, with the deficit control mania, really made the people poorer than what they used to be. Yes, it's impossible to make ends met. Yes, it's impossible to find a side job to complete your earnings. Yes, the cost of life has risen but not the salaries. Yes, the rich are getting richer and the middle class is becoming poor. Yes, there is an exagerated pressure on everyone. All that due to the EU politics that can only see the tree but totally miss the leaves and to our right wing socialist government (paradox?).

Portugal maintains a unitary semi-presidential republican form of government and is a developed country with an advanced economy, and very high living standards, having the 18th highest Social Progress in the world, putting it ahead of other western European countries like France, Spain and Italy.

Speaking strictly from a tourist's point-of-view, Portugal is developed just enough to make visiting a comfortable yet authentic experience. I recommend wholeheartedly that you go there.
