Not to 'trivialize' your question but before the Missouri River was channeled it was longer than the Mississippi River. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri_River

Die-hard Missourians say the only reason it's called the Mississippi River south of Saint Louis is the early explorers weren't aware of the Missouri river.
