It's been said that every state in the USA has a Springfield.
This isn't true; 35 states have a Springfield or a close cousin;
but the following states are Springfield-deficient:
Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Kansas,
Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota,
Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.
(Data from searches on MapQuest)

To make up for this, some states have more than one Springfield; the number if more than 1 is shown in parentheses in the map links below.

According to MapQuest there are 52 Springfields,
five West Springfields, four East Springfields,
four North Springfields, one South Springfield,
one Springfield Crossroads, one Springfield Plantation,
and one Springfield Gardens (not too far from me
in Long Island, New York).

The Geographic Names Information System (URL below) is the most authoritative source for U.S. place names. It lists 67 populated places named Springfield. That's not counting names like Springfield Gardens or East Springfield. There are another 19 places that have Springfield as a "variant name", usually because they were called Springfield at some time in the past.

The Springfields listed by the GNIS are in 33 different states plus the Virgin Islands. Georgia has the most Springfields (9), and Virginia comes in second place with 8.

The states with no Springfield are the ones listed by the previous respondent, plus Delaware and Mississippi. In those two states, MapQuest has compound names (Springfield Crossroads and Springfield Plantation, respectively).

You have gotten the best answers for city names (from USGS GNIS FAQ), but there are Springfield Armories, schools, colleges, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield.

And don't forget the Springfield Rifle there were thousands made, from 1794 to 1968, and hundreds still in the hands of collectors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield_Armory

This is the Trivia Section right? That would explain why you didn't look it up yourself.
