Guinea pigs are by far the best pets I've ever had. Easy maintenance:: feed daily, refill water bottle as needed, change bedding at least once a week and that's it. They don't require TONS of attention, but enjoy short cuddling sessions. Feeding is easy and fairly inexpensive, but be sure to buy food specifically for guinea pigs, not rabbits or hamsters. They enjoy fresh fruits & veggies! I suppliment the diet of my piggies with all the fruits/veggies we eat. They will very, very rarely bite and are actually quite shy but VERY lovable.

My best advice for their home:: Make sure the floor of their habitat is flat, not a cage or screen. Also BUY A BIGGER HABITAT THAN YOU THINK YOU REALLY NEED. They need room to move around, not those cramped little cages they try to sell you in the pet store. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, buy a big cage. Your piggie will love you for it. :)

Like some others that have answered I would go with the kitten soon to be a cat. They can amuse themselves and don't have to be house broken like a dog. We have two dogs and two cats, the cats are the least of the trouble. We put out a bowl of cat food and they feed themselves when hungry, I clean the litter pan each morning and change it once a week. One cat goes out for the day or maybe an hour or two so the litter pan does not get that messy.

The best animal, I think for a young girl/child even is a Boston Terrier (dog). Very lovable, cuddly, loyal, they are very smart and I can go on. I have had six of these dogs (not all at once) and they have brought my family great joy!

Hedgehogs are pretty independent critters.

I'd suggest a rat. They aren't at all ''kiddish'', are intelligent, and if you get a male, they'll usually be content with sitting in your kid's lap, while she watches TV.

A 13 year old would not have the capacity to correctly care for a pet. People assume that pets are easy to care for. For instance, goldfish require constant maintenance. The water needs to be changed every 2 weeks, and needs to be tested even more often.

It would be cruel to keep a pet cooped up in a kid's bedroom. Really think it through before you make a decision.

Hamsters are fairly easy to take care of. My 10 year old daughter has one. My 13 year old son has a gerbil that is pretty entertaining too. Fish are always relaxing but probably not what you would consider "fun". If you sit in your room doing homework though, it might be a relaxing distraction to feed them.

I worked in a pet store in highschool and we always recomended mice, rats, or guinea pigs because they are less likly to bite than hamsters. Gerbals are good too. Chincillas (sp?) are really soft, but they get scared kinda easy. I like ferrets but they have a tendency to smell unless you are really adament about cleaning their cages.

I would NOT recommend a ferret. They take as much time and care that you would give to a child. I own two ferrets and they take just as much care and time and my two kids. But with any pet, you cannot "keep" them in one room. What about a pet rock?
