Prime factorization is taking a number and making it a product of exclusively prime numbers
so for example....the number 51568
we can divide by 2: giving 25784
can divide by 2 again: giving 12892
can divide by 2 again: giving 6446
can divide by 2 again: 3223
we can divide by 11: 293
and 293 is prime.
so the prime factorization of 51,568 is
2*2*2*2*11*293
A bit easier example...105
can divide by 3: 35
can divide by 5: 7
7 is prime.
105 = 3*5*7

Start dividing by the smallest prime numbers possible. Keep dividing any non-prime portion until all you've got left are prime numbers.
490 = 2 x 245
245 = 5 x 49
49 = 7 x 7
2 x 5 x 7 x 7 = 490
It helps to know the first several prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, etc.

You must have missed this lesson. Just looking at 490 should tell you that the factors are 49x10, and 49 is 7x7, and 10 factors to 5x2. You should list them as 2x5x7x7 (ascending order). To get a GCF, you write out the prime factorization of the three numbers, then take only those factors that are common to all three lists, thus: 48 = 2x2x2x2x3, 84 = 2x2x3x7, 42 = 2x3x7. The only factors in all three lists are a 2 and a 3, so the GCF is 2x3=6.

You can use a factor tree. A factor tree is when you write the number 490. Then you write two lines connected to 490. connected to the lines would be two numbers that would have the product of 490. you keep doing that until you get down to the last numbers(If you dont understand that then your parents might have a better explanation). Anyway, the answer is 2*5*7^2.
