It depends. I know someone who applied to Columbia and didn't care whether she got in or not (she just applied to see if she could get in) and when she was rejected, she was in a total state of depression for a couple of days. I mean, she was slumped over desks, tables in the cafteria, in the middle of class, sobbing. If you think you are going to be that way if you don't get in, then don't bother applying. Its not worth doing that to yourself. But if you can handle the rejection, than why not? You never know!

Yes it is worth it. It doesn't hurt to try to get into a school that you may not get into, because who knows? You might get in. And if not, then at least you can say you tried.
