I say Joe Satriani and Eddie Van Halen even tie for number one.

If your asking me I would probably say jimmy page (zep) or satriani or vai or eric johnson or randy rhodes but if your asking the guitar playing community than the person voted the best year after year has consistantly been none other than JIMI HENDRIX (as per Guitar player magazine as well as many other mags) and it's the truth! jimi was the man! think of all the amazing riffs he did with what now seems like primitive gear and dont forget. he was only 27 when he died.

Most talented would either be Buckethead, Jimi, Yngwie Malmsteen, or Steve Vai. My favorite, though is Pete Townshend.

.....uli jon roth who s contributions remain the absolute benchmark of finesse n techical achievement ..see also michael schenker these two guys wrote the book on rock guitar also people never ever forget mr. clapton ....this question isnt answerable ..hendrix rhoads allman omg page richie blackmore the list goes on n on actually do you know who was voted by his peers as the most influential guitarist of all time ----- david gilmour of pink floyd !!!! hard to argue with that ....people it helps to be a musician to answer if somewhat this question but its an unfair n unrealistic question much like "whats the best color in the world " its all subjective .......i challenge you to go see uli jon roth he was the ground-breaking guitarist in the early scorpions stuff ..used to be in guitar mags people like hammett n mustaine quickly named him as the greatest even satch said this n satch insists that roth plays any european g3 guitar shows as he has done with michael schenker these two guys wrote the books on heavy riffs ...honorable mention must go to tony iomini from black sabbath n i must finally say i think zakk wylde is the most well rounded schooled master on any stage these days he can do it all sing play compose you name it ........ best to all !!!

Jimi Hendrix was the best there ever was in both the technical sense and the way he could put feeling into his music. And if you disagree...too bad, you'll never convince me otherwise!
