A cover is when someone else does the song. Here some examples:
Akon- Mr. Lonely, 1st done by Bobby Vinton
Beatles- Please Mr. Postman, Marvelettes.
Run MC- Walk This Way
Soft Cell- Where Did Our Love Go?, Supremes
Marylin Manson- Sweet Dreams, Eurythmics
Green Day, & U2 -The Staints Are Coming, the Skids...
There are many, but some are really bad. Others bring the song back into the spotlight for a second round.

Ok so lets have an example. Jimi Hendrix records his hit song "Fire" in 1972. Later on, in 1989, the Chili Peppers recorded their own version of the song. So basically, a "cover" is when someone takes a song that was first recorded by someone else, then does their own rendition of it. Even one-time live performances of the older song are covers.

It's when a singer records/sings a song by another band/artist.
Think of knockin' on heavens' door by Bob Dylan....Guns n' Roses (and others) covered that song.

It means they're singing a song that is not their own. They're "covering" a song by another band/artist.

Covers are music that has been produced and sung by other people.Example: Metallica did Whiskey in the jar when originally it was produced and sung by Thin Lizzy which was probably produced and sung by some drunk Irishman.
