I have a computer that does not have an operating system. Nor does it have any internal cd or dvd drive. The only thing it has is a floppy drive. Can I install an operating system if I add an external cdrw drive?

You say it only has a floppy drive does that mean you don't have a hard drive too. Without a hard drive you cant install anything. If you do have a hard drive and your systems BIOS can be configured to read a CD at start up then you can use an external CD to install a O/S. One thing to watch for is to get a external CD that can be attached either by serial, parallel. It can have USB but you may not get the USB to be read at startup without the drivers. Also if your system can not be set to read a CD at start up you can use a floppy, that has the correct drivers and files, to start CD to do the install. I dont work for them but the GEEK Squad can help.

you need a cd drive no matter whatthese days. only on the really old computers you can install an os with a floppy.
just buy a regular cd drive stick it in.

and load a newer os like 98,2000, or xp

If your bios support your external CDRW device, you can set it to boot from your external device.

You can only use an external cd-rom drive if your system has the ability to boot to a usb device. (unless it's an eSATA drive, however, I doubt your system has eSATA ports)

Hi. If you can instruct BIOS to boot from the external port then maybe. But I think even if it worked it would be very slow.

No, you need an OS for USB to work. You need to install a CD-ROM drive. It's very easy. Only two plugs!
