Three real choices -
Acoustic steel string
Acoustic nylon string
Electric

I'm guessing maybe you need it for organized lessons? If your teacher doesn't care, go for a nylon string acoustic. They're easier on your fingers. If you have very small hands, you might consider a steel string, the neck is narrower.

An electric really requires an amplifier, which will add cost.

Don't worry about brand names, figure out about how much you can spend, and buy the best guitar for the price. You might check for used nylon string guitars at your local music store. Spend as much as you can without going over budget. Also, try to get someone to go with you who knows something about guitars so you don't get a bad one.

Dude, guitars all have 6 strings.
Unless you're talking about a 12 string, but that's another story.

The cheapest you can get is $150 for a starter pack at the guitar center.

honestly... i would go to a local pawn shop or music store. that's where i (as well as many other guitar players) found my first guitar.
I found an ibanez for 100 dollars... i would caution against ebay. Without playing it, you don't really know what you're going to get.

Try looking on www.craigslist.com - you may be able to get it inexpensively or even through a trade.
