petite is actually a height thing, not a weight or size thing. If you are 5'3" or shorter, you are considered petite. Ann Taylor Loft makes petite clothes from size 00 to 14. It is intended for anybody below 5'4". At 5'4" I can usually shop in both the regular sizes and petite sizes.

petite is really about height..like shorter than 5'3" ..because if you go into a petite department they have just as big of sizes as the regular department they are just shorter. people would usually say "oh she's petite" to someone who is short and like 115 or less I would guess. I have a friend who weighs only 95 pounds (she's not anorexic just naturally very thin) but she can't wear petite clothes because they are too short for her.

Although it's not the original meaning of the word, "petite" has for years now meant 5'4" and under. The clothing industry took over the word years ago. As far as fashion goes, it just means short. You can buy petite clothing in sizes from 0 to huge numbers, they are just cut for short people.

The online dictionary I just looked at said:

1. small, slender and trim;
2. a clothing size for short slender women.

"Petite" always meant short, but it didn't always include overweight people like it does now with clothing.

i think of petite as skinny.not petite doesn't mean overweight, actually average to me is not petite. but that's just how i think of it.
