I just started a part time job, just enough to make some extra cash to save for Disney World and then after that for fun money so we are not so broke to be able to save. (I don't tell my coworkers that though)
Anyway I go to college and have only 2 more yrs left. My problem is that I have a really excellent vocabulary. I feel like my vocab tends to allienate me at the new job.
Thank you!

OK Question man, here's my question. What should I do?

I am working in a kitchen at a golf course. It is nothing I do on purpose. I just assume that most people know the words I say. For me they are not that hard.
I can not change to a place where I may fit in better because I need the mommy hours. These types of hours are very hard to come by. 8:30 am to 2:20 pm.

D you did not read the whole thind. Also, people do not have to have wonderful writing skills to have a good vocabulary. Those are two seperate skills.

I hope that what you are saying is not an inkling of what is to come about in the future for America - illiteracy abounding! I work at a community college, and the student's work that comes across my desk (I'm not an instructor-just a secretary) indicates to me that the high schools are graduating students before they are fully prepared for college-level learning.

Then we have you - you are attending college to better yourself, and you have to work with people who either quit during high school, or graduated with no immediate plans to attend a college or university. And you feel guilty? You sense that your educational level is alienating you from friendships where you work? I'm suprised and sorry that our society has come to this - persons who strive to have a better life are made to feel shame.

My suggestion to you is to not emotionally lock yourself into making friends at work. Focus on your making the money you need to make and on achieving your future goals. People will come and go, and those who decide to dislike you will make up faults (even if they can't find any). This is just human nature; this is not going to be your life-long job; it is merely short term. During school, you will make some good friends, and after you graduate and begin your career, you will begin to make some really great friends who will be more "equally yoked" in life experiences & goals.

Don't fret. Just be professional at work - courteous, respectful, responsible, no gossiping, hard worker, patient, team player, dependable and greet everyone with a smile. Continue to work on your vocabulary - who knows, maybe one day you'll decide to teach and we NEED people who DO have great vocabularies!!

so what's your question?

Should you use $10 words at a $2 job? No. Don't talk DOWN to your peers, but you don't have to use a 10 syllable word when no, or yes work.

Most people don't what long answers to questions either or to be told how to do things better, or any of that. They also don't like being made to feel or look stupid.

Save you vocabulary for your $100 job interview after you graduate.

Everybody likes a little @ss, nobody likes a SMART@ss.

Having a large vocabulary is great and all, but unless you just want to win at scrabble what you really want to do is master the language.

Part of that is being able to carry on a conversation with almost anyone without alienating or confusing them by your choice of words. This may feel to you that you're 'dumbing down' yourself to fit in, but don't look at it that way. What you're doing is effectively communicating. If they don't know what you're saying or are annoyed because they feel you're showing off then they aren't paying attention to the message that you're trying to convey.

Though I'm not sure exactlly what your question is I think you should finish collage and stay at your job using as many big words as you want. It's not your fault that your co-workers don't know the meaning of supercalifragilisticespialidosious and you do. They just aren't ar gifted as you are. A big vocab can be very useful.

Maybe it's really not about your vocabulary but how you are coming off to your coworkers. Are they getting vibes that maybe you view yourself as on a higher plane than them because you are pursuing a college education and won't be doing what they're doing for the rest of your life?

if you have an excellent vocabulary then you should have an excellent mastery of it, including the ability to turn it off, or as i like to call it "talk dumb"

i do it all the time with my friends and husband... it's not tough... actually rather fun =D

but if your vocabulary is so advanced why not look for a more fitting job?

Is your part time job permanant? If not, it might not matter what your coworkers think. Also, if they know you are in college and they're not, sometimes that makes people pick on you...trying to show you they are just as good. Even when that hasn't entered anyone elses head but their own. I had that happen to me before.

solid foodstuff! there are various careers in the Air tension that are sensible in civilian existence, as properly. not absolutely everyone in the AF is straight away linked with flying; it takes approximately 20 or extra people "on the floor" to maintain each pilot in the sky. (it truly is probable even extra desirable than that, yet i don't recognize the certainly quantity.) plane maintenance has many sub-specialties: turbine engines, helicopters, sheet metallic, avionics, and so on.) as properly as all the computing gadget-appropriate AF jobs. One unfavourable could desire to be that many AF bases are extensive and not close to important cities. some are in truly distant areas, many are chilly, many are warm. i strengthen into in the army (drafted), yet while i strengthen into going to connect a branch of the militia, AF could be #a million without hesitation; military could be #2.

you might want to save your excellent vocabulary for college and be a bit more down to earth with your co-workers. it sounds like your vocab is a bit intimidating to them. tone it down a bit and try to make it a fun place to work

Where is it that you work?

I am not sure why it would allienate you, unless you are correcting people. Are you talking over their heads?

Go, do your job, leave - you don't need to become best friends with your co-workers.

Good luck!
