It's not the best invention by a long shot. It hasn't had nearly as profound an influence on the development of civilization as many other inventions such as the printing press or agriculture or many other developments that have shaped history.
However, in the near to moderate future it will undoubtedly take its place as a crucial invention that led to the massive distribution of information and development of new and complex global buisiness and social networks.
