tried to update driver, it says I already have the most updated version. Tried doing a sys restore, (six time, six different dates), won't let me do it. I don't really want to do a destructive restore, because I have some things that I haven't saved to disc yet that I don't want to lose. Any advice??

Thanks Biggles, but that doesn't work, when it comes back on it hasn't added the driver, it remains empty.

in many circumstances which ability there's a topic count with the peice of hardware. the biggest ideal subject and least confusing subject to do is to uninstall then reinstall the drivers. If that doesn't do it then study which you have the cables marvelous related to the gadget, Motherboard, and capability furnish. If all that exams out ok then attempt contacting the producer or looking their help internet site. that for the period of many circumstances does the trick.

hey,
because this problem sounds a bit to advanced for you to fix it (no affence ment) you should do one of the following:
if you have purchased your computer from a company phone them up and they should be able to help you.
or
take your computer into a local computer shop and ge them to deal with it.
But it looks like you are going to loose your work so i would back it all up onto a flash drive or an external hard drive. Then i would take it to a computer shop and get them to format it and reset the whole system back up.
But good luck with it and i would follow one of these.

go to the device manager again but this time don't try to update the drivers uninstall them instead then reboot, windows will then detect the drive as new hardware and install the correct drivers for it

it does mean your drive isn't working properly...before u buy a new one tho open the case (make sure you tonch a non-electriacal metal object in case of any static first) & check the connectors in the back..also give them a wipe over with a soft cloth cos sometimes dust can build up & they don't connect properly..if there's a build of of dust elsewhere in the case clean that out to..good luck

Replace it. They're cheap. I bought a dual layer DVD-RW from TigerDirect for $20 after rebate earlier this year.
