I do it my way unless I get stuck. Then I try to read the directions, after trying to find the ones that actually are in English!

When building something, I read the directions, when driving, I follow the signs.

My way, notice that all the directions/instructions are written in Chinese anyway. When all my resources of Bluff and Bullsh*t fail me I do tend to sneak a look at the diagrams.
