The car has 65K miles. I checked the oil, very low to none. No alarm lights came on. I added 3 quarts of oil. The knocking is still going on. Do you know what's wrong with the engine and why it's knocking? Thanks for your response.

If it was ran with no or very little oil, it's probably pretty much trashed inside. The bearings are most likely the cause, but the rods and journals on the crankshaft are proably damaged too. Put synthetic oil in it from now on and see if it stops, if it doesn't, it most likely needs bearings. But keep in mind, the cylinder walls and rings were proably fried pretty good as was probably pretty much everthing there. Good luck!

there are a few things to consider - 1} your oil light should have come on when low on oil - 2} you might have caused some engine damage running it with low oil 3 } and this is probably the case - try using a higher octane gas , sometimes cars no matter who made them will give you signs that the gas being used sucks ! knocking - engine run on - stutters after ignition is shut off and so on , try the better gas first but wait until almost empty that way there shouldn't be much of the old gas left in the system ! do this for 2 tanks of gas if it still happens then you may very well have engine damage - hope this helps you out

If you added 3 qts. to a 4 qt. system then you may have seriously damaged the bearings. The knocking you hear is the connecting rods on the crankshaft.

1. Raise the vehicle & place on jack stands

2. Drain the engine

3. Remove the oil pan

4. Wiggle the bearing caps on the crankshaft. There should be no vertical movement. If so, then remove the engine for a rebuild because the crank & cam bearings will be in similar condition.

Good Luck

Exactly what NO NO Said.... Change oil, but add some "LUCAS ENGINE TREATMENT". TOP OF THE LINE STUFF!! Stock car racers use it to treat their engines!
