They tried too hard to update it to 1976. The first movie was set in 1933 and the other one 1976. During this transfusion it just lost the 'heart' that made King Kong popular to begin with. When Peter Jackson remade it for us 2 years ago, he also set it in 1933 and remained true to the first movie's script adding only tidbids of dialogue to connect the 2 films. He managed to make changes that reinforced the popularity of Kong, by keeping the 'heart' of King Kong intact. In 1976, it was Hollywood that killed the 'beast'. In 1933 & 2005, it was indeed 'beauty that killed the beast'. :-)

it was a poor attempt to modernize it.

atleast the 2006 one was based directly on the 1933 one. they went as far as geting some (dont know which) original props for it too.
