You will need to clean it very well. You can use a premium latex paint. Do not go to a dark color. Aluminum (and vinyl) siding expands and contracts with heat and cold. Dark colors draw heat and it will expand more. Paint the ends of the siding when it is cool. This way, it is cooled and contracted. Otherwise, if you paint it while it is hot, when it contracts you will see the old color.

Hi, I could go step by step with you,if you would like, but I'm just going to give you some pointers. I was just looking at the Valspar Paint site, and they have boo-qoo answers on preping, paints exterior and interior, what kind of rollers, the finishes, you name it.I think the site might be more helpful to you than me just telling you, because Sometimes I have a hard time explaining things to other people.(the right words to use). I know how to do it ,just not how to say it!well, first, you'll need to prepare your surface.Preparation is 90% of the job.If you neglect this stage, you final finishes will be affected. So save yourself a headache and spend a little more time on your project ,and do it correctly.Washing off the surface is the first step.Use a little T.S.P. about a Tablespoon full per gallon. Wash from bottom to top, that way you won't have dirty water streaks going down the sides that will show under the finish. Than you'll need to sand any rough spots. Use a zinc enriched (oil base is the best for your job) primer. Than use an oil-based paint. You could use water base on both if you prefer. It'll turn out real pretty, and last for a million years I bet! Bye now . Go to Valspar .com, at the top of the page is their list of things your doing information.Bye

When I painted ours I power washed the siding and let it dry for a day then bought a good semi gloss paint, then I trimmed the bottom of each siding piece with a brush and rolled the paint on the rest of it, this process actually went pretty fast, our house is a one storey 1832 sq. ft. and I had the house and detached two car garage and shutters trimmed out in a week doing it myself. Just work out of direct sunlite as much as you can.

Consult a professional at Ace Hdwe, Menard's, Home Depot, Lowe's. They sell primers and paint that cover alum siding. Lots of luck!
