i live in a small incorperated town in n.e nv. my home and yard are old we keep it livable but not fancy like others in town, my yard is large but not kept green because we are having a water shortage and the waste of water to green up my lawn is in my oppinion is wrong(it is a desert after all)my neibors of which there are few are not bothered by this as its kept neat, but the rest of town seems bothered by what they see,and want to force me to spruce up my home and yard. does any one have any info on my rights regarding the look of my property, i own the land and home,and is not in a planed or walled community.

Check with your city ordinances and see what they say about this. Unless you have a homeowner's association and they have rules and regulations regarding green and colors etc. just ignore them all. Better yet put a sign up in your yard that says you're going green -- in this case brown is green because you're conserving water.

People just want to keep up with the Jones's but i think you are in your right, I know if you don't belong to a housing authority or something like it you do as you wish.. Good luck I am in AZ and I think the use of water the green up the lawn is just stupid when in a couple of months the water is in short supply.

if you are not subject to any covenents, and your neighbors are not complaining about their property values going down, and it's not a health hazard - no.

There's a fanmous case about a guy who put a toilet seat on a pole in his yard, and maybe painted his house purpple, and the court said they are not judges of the aesthetic. The case might be from Indiana.

If anyone complains, ask them to furnish you with copies of any ordinances for which you are not in compliance.
Property maintenance laws are local issues.
