Sometimes it is created from corn or sugarcane, or any number of substances.
They already make the stuff, it is efficient and 100%renewable.

Have you ever heard of turpentine? This is tree sap. It has a similar molecular weight to gas or diesel fuel. Unfortunately it come trees, Generally trees grow very slowly.

Maybe they could genetically modify(GM) some fast growing plants to produce turpentine. Wouldn’t the anti-GM protestors throw a fit over that !!?

Most of the petroleum taken out of the ground occurred right in the living plants and their decomposition products. The gunk just pooled under the ground and remained there unchanged until we pumped it out and purified it or converted into some other compound through the miracles of Chemical Engineering.

Actually, we don't need to cross-breed plants to get fuel substitutes. Right now, we can get ethanol, which is a type of fuel, from corn. All that we need to do is popularize it.

I hope that this helps.
