is it really an insult if it's the truth? it's not like the person is stuck being fat forever if they really want to be skinny.

Would you be offended if someone said you were ugly? No, your feelings would be hurt. Even if it is the truth, it still hurts.

I am more offended that people make assumptions about things when they judge to quickly. Perhaps if they actually thought about what they were reading they might actually understand the question instead of taking a 'shoot first ask questions later' stand every time something stirs up their emotions. I wonder did anyone actually stop and think that this might be a valid question? If someone called me a brown haired person, should I be offended? I wouldn't be, not because public perception views it to be OK to have brown hair, but because I am at peace with my self.

Maybe what is being stated here is that people should not place their happiness and self value in the hands of exterior sources. Perhaps this question was to deep for shallow minds who shoot their mouth off at slightest controversial statement .

Shame on everyone!

Come on now, you know it's an insult to call people fat. It is just rude and really none of your business. Try to look beyond the persons body and see them for who they are on the inside.

not everyone gets offended when you call them fat. in fact, not even everyone who's fat gets offended. if, for example, i were to call you stupid, and you got offended, what would that mean? (especially if it were true...?)

i think it would mean that there are certain people that each of us can hear the truth from. it is usually someone with whom we have established trust and who we know is not saying things just to hurt our feelings. often it requires that we have some degree of self knowledge as well.

They aren't offended at you personally. They know that they are fat because they are pounded by it everyday on tv. Then, when they actually get out, they have to hear it from you. That's what makes them upset.
Believe it or not, it's not "just that easy" to loose weight. Some have very poor metabolism that is very hard to change.

There are some personal things that are obvious but it is highly impolite and cruel to point them out to others. You wouldn't want to tell a woman that she was flat-chested and looked more like a man (she could get a boob job or stuff her bra). You don't tell someone their clothes are horrible and they always dress like hell (they could develop better taste and buy more clothes). You don't tell anyone their cologne smells like vomit, if you are leaving the elevator soon. And you don't tell a woman that she is fat. It is too personal and you would be rude at best.

If you ask me, I don't think that it is in anyone's place to vocalize such an observation. If a person is over weight, he/she should know that. For no reason should they need you, me, or anyone else for that matter to tell them that. Basically, unless you are a loving friend who is greatly concerned about the individual's health and future, you should keep your mouth shut. (By the way, in that case, you should still try to be tactful in voicing your concern. Insulting the person does not help at all.)

They get offended because it's rude and insensitive. Whether they're "stuck" being fat or not, is it really YOUR job to point out their weakness and/or shortcomings??

You're obviously either young or ignorant. Are you offended?
