I bought a Compaq SR1920NX many months ago; I already added RAM, a new video card, etc... but now I'm looking at processor. I believe this is a Socket 939 motherboard (currently housing an AMD Athlon 64 3500+)... seems Socket 939 is becomming less and less common due to AM2.

Can I upgrade to, say, this?

"AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz / 1MB Cache / 1000MHz (2000 MT/s) FSB / Dual-Core (Manchester) / OEM / Socket 939 / Processor"

More importantly, would it be WORTH IT? The cache looks nice, as does dualcore... but I'd like opinions first. A new motherboard/cpu combo is out of the question ATM, hence why I am only looking at a Processor. Seems this is as high as I can go.

Just a quick addition; my power supply CAN handle any future upgrades, I replaced the 350W PSU with a 465W shortly after buying it.

You should check if your current mainboard and BIOS supports a dual core CPU first. There's no point in putting a dual core CPU if your mainboard can't use it, even if it's S939.

before you do anything, you have to make sure that your current motherboard can handle the new, better processor. since you've already spent so much after this system, i would suggest you just buy the 140 buck processor. but, it is going to suck trying it install it. and if you do change it, buy a really good thermal paste, not the cheap crap. it usually runs around 10 bucks. it is copper or silver based. very good and very clean

Save your money. You will see little real world gain. Save up for 6 months and build a whole new system. It might boot marginally faster but I doubt you will notice any improvements.
