a^2 + 2a + ab + 2b

To solve this, you use a method called grouping. Factor the first two terms and the last two terms.

a(a + 2) + b(a + 2)

Notice how they now have (a + 2) in common? *Factor* (a + 2) out of the entire expression.

(a + 2)(a + b)

a.)
a^2 + 2a + ab + 2b

Group Factoring

(a^2 + 2a) + (ab + 2b)
a(a + 2) + b(a + 2)

because both "a" and "b" have the same factor, you can form them like this

(a + b)(a + 2)

a^2 + 2a +ab +2b

factor by groups

(a^2 + 2a) + (ab + 2b)

take out a and b
a(a+2) + b(a+2)

take out a +2

(a+2)(a+b)

hope this helps

if you don't get grouping... try this .... think of foil in reverse...

the first * first = a^2 (a * a)
the outside is either ab or 2a ...
the inside will be the other ...
lasts are 2 * b ...........

from the first ... i know a * a .... ( A +- ) ( A -+ )
from the lasts .. i know 2 * b (A+B)(A+2) or (A-2)( A-B)

the middle terms don't add when you use the negatives ...
so it must be
(a+2)(a+b)

try to understand the factoring by group ... its faster

You can factor by grouping.

a^2 + 2a +ab +2b

(a^2 + 2a) +(ab +2b)

a(a + 2) + b(a + 2)

(a + b)(a + 2)

Group factor

a² + 2a + ab + 2b

a(a + 2) + b(a + 2)

(a + b)(a + 2)
