I have hadto have two blood tests in the last 3 months. At the hospital they tried both arms and ended up taking blood from my hand with a different sort of needle. This was not easy either. One nurse had to help by actually squeesing my arm to help get some blood into the tube. I ended up with both arms and my hand badly bruised. The latest attemp to get a blood test done ended up in the doctor getting no blood! Yet each time she withdrew the needle, blood spurted out. Once again i have both arms blue. I have to come back in another week and she will try again! I am 50, in fairly good health and through the years i have never had a problem in giving blood. The only difference is that i have been taking Mirtrazapine on and off for about 2 years. Other than this i dont take anything. Has anyone else had this happen. I am getting worried and am not looking forward to my next appointment where they will attempt to get some blood, nor the large bruises that it leaves.

I am 54. You have poor circulation. Do daily aerobics and stretching to increase your blood flow and your veins will respond by growing bigger. The brusing is yet another sign of poor circulation. If you wish to discuss this further, go to AllExperts, then Health, then Aging. I have a site there where I can discuss in detail exercises you can do.

Are you overweight or do you have large arms? Sometimes this can hinder some nurses in taking blood. HOWEVER, it depends on the skill of the nurse or practitioner. As for doctors doing bloodwork, they NEVER do it..so they are usually horrible at drawing blood. Why don't you ask for an order to go to the hospital and get your bloodwork done by someone more skilled and tell the doctors office why you want to go. Then the day of the test, drink lots of water. This will hydrate your blood and make them stand up nice for the blood work. Sticking shouldn't be a problem. Hope it goes well. Godloveya.

Hi I had the same problem. My arms were all black and blue. If the nurse cant get your blood in two attempts she should stop.
Now when I go for blood tests she uses a butterfly needle and takes it from the back of my hand , and it is a lot better.
and Good Luck

you need to take better care of yourself. drink lots of water in the 12 hrs before your scheduled blood work. keep yourself hydrated at all times to ensure that blood tests done without warning will be effective. some people have poor venous access for many reason, but hydration will improve things a bit.

You may just have small veins. Be sure you drink a lot so that you will be very well hydrated before going for blood tests.
