Good question, I'm not sure of the answer. It is a controlled substance with federal and state regulations governing its transportation and distribution. I agree it is no less a hazard than white gas, propane, or lighter fluid, which you can easily buy in stores. However, the markets for those products already have in place the kinds of containers they're stored in and the sellers have complied with whatever regulations they have had to comply with to sell it to stores. I guess ultimately it is because Chevron or Shell or whoever doesn't choose to sell it that way. Gasoline is refined, put on a tanker truck, transported to a gas station and pumped into the underground storage tanks there.
You can, however, buy an approved gasoline can, go to the pump, fill it with unleaded, and bring that home and put it in your garage.
You would get tired real fast trying to fill your car up with 5 gallon cans of gasoline. Five gallons of gas weighs a lot and you'd probably need three 5 gallon containers just to fill your car up once. A lot of work for no good reason. Carry disposable rubber gloves with you if you don't want to touch the pumps with your bare hands.

Not all flammables are in the quantities that you would use to pump your car... 16 gal or so on most compacts... thats a pretty large volume being held at your home, imagine the tank in your garage breaks and leaks and then starts on fire.... What do you think would happen to insurance rates? Not to mention, how would you get all that gas to your house? How much would you have to pay to have a tanker stop every week like garbage trucks? Or if it had to make a special trip because you drive that much more... I can see it now, boss, I cant come in I have no gas....
BTW, you DO buy gas at the store, its called a GAS STATION, just like you go to the store for groceries, we call that a GROCERY store....amazing. most chain gas stations have gloves near the deisel gas pump for your sanitary convenience...

Think about how much gasoline you use on a weekly basis. Those that drive SUV's use 40+ gallons, and many people use that on a weekly basis, if not more. Imagine carring 40 gallons of milk into your house. Now imagine finding a place to store it. And Now imagine having to pour those 40 gallons into your gas tank when you need it for your car.
Not very practical is it?
States like CT, OR have full service gas stations. You probably want to move to one of these states to avoid touching the pumps. :-p

Gas fumes escape more easily from containers, and believe it or not there are stupid people in the world that would blow themselves up because of these fumes. This would then burn the building down, causing insurance companies to deny companies. Plus gasoline in a certain amount is considered a Haz-mat scene if a problem occurs, where propane disperces easier.

You can buy gasoline in stores. WalMart and other sporting goods stores sell Coleman white gas in one gallon cans (for almost five bucks per...) It's just much cheaper, and much safer to buy it in bulk quantities and put it directly into your car's gas tank.

How are you going to carry 20gal of gas while smoking a cigarette? It does't sound safe to me. Put a set of plastic gloves in the glove box and put them on when you have to pump gas. Good luck
