I know it will be hard to tell from what I am about to describe, but if you could tell me the name of this bug/pest/insect, and maybe suggest a good way to get rid of them, I'd appreciate that.
Here's the description: It's tiny (as tiny as a very sharp pencil tip), it's dark (almost black), crawls and there were a lot of them in an area (maybe around 4 or 5 per square inch area). I found them on 1st floor (a hardwood floor) at the corner of the house inside. My wife has been wiping them out over 10 times a day and now there are only a few that we notice, but they still show up and I want to get rid of them and I'd like to know their name first...

I took a picture of it, but it wasn't very helpful, so just describing it here.

One other thing that I forgot to mention is that I've also seen these bugs outside an old house on wood siding around this time of the year.

With the digital camera that I have the picture really doesn't help. You can hardly see the bug and it's blurry.

I live in NC. The climate here is not so dry, not really humid either. Just some where in the middle. Temperature here now a days reach around mid to high 80s (except for last couple of days and next couple of days were and will be cold - high 50s).

I live in a new construction home area and the house sits on top of concrete slab.

I do have a toddler and an infant so treatment needs to be child-proof and child-safe.

I've called some pest control places and man they are expensive...

There is a website that can help you decide what the pest is, and how to get rid of it in the least toxic (to us) manner.

http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu <-- main site

http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/NE/index.html <-- can help you id the pest.

It's a site from the University of California, Davis about Integrated Pest Management which is a far more thoughtful way about getting rid of pests, than just using spray. Hopefully this site can help you identify the pest!

PS I just saw someone recommending Sevin dust or diazinon. Those are toxic to the pests, but diazinon was taken off the market for urban users because of how toxic it was to humans as well (especially children and pets). Most people don't read the instructions and so apply incredibly toxic amounts of pesticide to relatively harmless pests! Even reading and applying by the label doesn't guarantee safety....

A picture, any quality, would be helpful. They could be ants, bole weevils (in case ther happens to be grains present), or a number of other things. What also would help is what kind of climate you live in. Arid, wet, cold, etc.? Diazanon works well to ward off insects, as does seven dust. I wouldnt suggest using seven dust if you have small children or equally small pets.

It might be mites or it could be Springtails. Look at the source for more information. I hope this helps you!
