Britax are great, the infant and the other convertable seats are awesome. We love our Britax marathons. The Britax infant seats ratings were among the ones that were wrong, and Consumer Reports is re-evaluating ALL of the infant seats they tested, not just the ones with negatives.
I did have that issue of the magazine but didn't save it because they printed a retraction. ALL of those seats are being re-evaluated, so the 2/07 article isn't an accurate guide for positive or negative reviews at all.
Let me put it this way: my Britax infant seat was not recalled, none of my Britax Marathon carseats have ever been subject of a recall. We registered all of them with Britax when we bought them, and have never had one minute of worry. They communicate with you, and if there was a problem they would notify their customers.
Relax mama, that CR 2/07 issue was FULL of errors and they are re-evaluating all of the ones they reviewed. Don't let inaccurate reports upset you.

The test info was removed because the test was not done correctly. It was done at OVER 70 MPH!
The test was redone at the correct speed and all seats were fine.
After hearing the first report, I almost bought a new carseat, but I didn't get around to it for a couple days. Then I heard the new report on the news and still use an Evenlfo seat.

I don't know about the Feb. consumer report on carseats but I read the consumer report that came out in Dec. 2006 or Jan 2007 and Graco Snug ride was listed the best top rated in safety of all the carseats tested at that time. That is what I bought for my son.

I know the Baby Trend Flex-Loc did well cuz it's the car seat we have. The purpose of the test was to test car seats to the same government standards that cars are test, 35 mph, versus the lower government car seat requirement of only 30 mph. Turns out that Consumer Reports tested the carseats to twice the limit, 70 mph. So, those that "passed" are even better than the results implied; however, those that "failed" didn't necessarily fail.

Here is an article from CNN.com that talks about the recalled consumer reports car seat study.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/AUTOS/01/18/car_seat/index.html
Here is the original story based on the report that had come out and been pulled.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/AUTOS/01/04/car_seats/index.html
The original report had found the Evenflo discovery didn't even meet federal standards.
Only the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS performed well in the consumer report tests.
There's more information in the articles, but these were the biggest results.
We personally had the Chicco key fit when he was an infant and once he outgrew that (over the weight limit) we bought the Britax Roundabout. We love both.
Good luck.

Consumer Reports recalled the article because they lied about the speed the seats were tested at - they were tested at 70mph, not 35.
The best car seat is going to be the one that fits best in your individual car & doesn't move more than 1/2 an inch in any direction (side-to-side or front-to-back).
Graco is popular because it's relatively easy to install; but if you want the safest (meaning ones that have met the most government standards) you're going to want a European seat. American standards are really low in comparison.
And I would take any advice from a BRU associate with a grain of salt - they aren't taught about car seat safety nearly enough, but they are taught to agree with you to get you to buy something.
