First you should read a book, "Eleanor and the Three Kings." She was married to Louis VII of France and so was queen of France. Next, she was married to Henry II of England, so she was queen of England. She was mother to Richard I "The Lion Heart," and King John.

She was the heiress of William IX, Duke of Aquitaine. Louis VI of France ordered her to marry (as was his right as her lord) his son Louis, who would succeed him as Louis VII. That made Louis VII not only King of France but Duke of Aquitaine (AHA!).

Eleanor indeed went on crusade with Louis. But she did not have sons. So Louis invented an excuse that she was too closely related to him.

What Louis VII did not realize is that having fulfilled her feudal duty by marrying him, Eleanor was free to marry next whom she would. She married Henry, son of Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou. Geoffrey was involved in a disputed succession to the kingdom of England, duchy of Normandy, and duchy of Brittany. In 1154, within weeks of one another, Geoffry died, King Stephen died, and Henry succeeded as Henry II of England. Thus he was now King of England, Duke of Normandy, Brittany, and Aquitaine, and Count of Anjou. He was a king of his own country with the right to be the vassal of the King of France to rule a territory one-third of the land area of France.

Apparently, Eleanor of Aquitaine affected the history of England and France, plus set off the 100-Years War 200 years later. How's that for influence?

Okay, to begin with, she had nothing to do with the Tudors. She was the matriarch of the Plantagenet Line of Kings. The Tudors took over about 350 years later, after the War of the Roses.

She was the daughter of an impressive Duke who knew that she would likely be his heiress, so he arranged in her marriage contract that she would remain the primary ruler of the Aquitaine. This was unusual at the time.

She married Louis, but the marriage was pretty much a disaster. She was unable to produce him with a son and heir, and she and he had completely different personalities. He took her on a Crusade, and she and her ladies rode part of the way topless as they reenacted some literary scene. (I think it was the Amazons).

Anyway, she eventually got Louis to ask the Pope for an anullment on the basis of consanguinity. They were closely related enough to make it a legitmate complaint, and they blamed their lack of a son on this close relationship.

She quickly then married Henry of Anjou, who then immediatley became Henry II of England, reclaiming the throne his mother Mathilde had been denied.

With her wealth and his power, they were very much THE power couple of the day. They had several children, two of which became ruling kings of England.

She became quite a controversial figure. her vociferous objection to Henry's escapades with Rosalind and her support of some plots against Henry earned her a virtual imprisonment for most of his reign.

She was said to be descended from one of the greatest bards of Europe, and her love of music and poetry, as well as her renowned beauty, are all legendary. She is considered one of the greatest Queen Consorts Europe ever saw.

Most people who begin to study her fall in love with her tale. I believe Alison Weir wrote an biography about her. And, of course, there is the famous, though not entirely accurate, "Lion in Winter", which won on oscar. It is a great film, which gives you some idea of her personal attraction and power.

Eleanor is always mentioned on the list of the greatest women of European history.
