use them to nurse, and raise them, cook their food, and tuck them in at night?

Wouldn't an "animal" only do field work?

Doesn't this contradiction expose how lazy THEY really were?

Isaac - I agree, I am guilty of perpetuating this modern slavery. I travel often and look the other way when I know my hotel housekeeping is part of this problem you describe.

Slaves in the 1800's were generally not treated so badly as many think; true, that some slave owners did, and even generally speaking, it was felt slaves were sub-human, however, this was no reason to treat them badly. In many areas slaves were family to white owners; they were treated as such and slaves had no intention of "escaping" to the North; they had it "good" in their terms.
A slave who lived in Kentucky or Northern Virginia or areas other than the deep South were rather well off as they worked relatively easy jobs such as domestic work or gardners or general field labor, a slave dreded being sent "down river" to Southern plantations as they were worked to death, whipped and whatever else for any given reason the master felt was good for a whipping. Plantation work was terrible as it was competitive and the more you pushed your cheap labor the more the growers earned. Keep in mind a good slave was worth alot of money, even a few thousand dollars and at that time that was Big money.
Slaves were sometimes sold to offset losses or pay a debt. In those days if you owed someone money it was a serious matter, if you failed to pay not only could you loose your home, but you could go to prison. A slave could be sold and separated from family to pay a dept, it happened all to often.
I can't agree that slaves were lazy, there were slaves so smart and energetic they were "allowed" to run businesses while white owners collected the money earned and the slave given a token payment for running a company.
The politics of the South were prohibitive for black slaves and white owners. In the event the white owner respected his slaves and even paid them and treated them well, they could not openly show too much affection for them, expecially in the Deep South were segragation was the law and expected of "decent God fearing white folks" refrain from familiarizing themselves with black slaves; it simply wasen't done if you were a "decent person". As lazyness goes, slaves treated well produced more than those who were horse whipped in the long run; a slave earned nothing and had no reason, other than the whip or loyalty, to work hard.
Being born a black slave and learning from your parents that you were just labor, a "N*****", was not an insult, it was life and that's the way it was Then; the parents were taught this buy their parents and so on and this is how it went.
ISSAC makes a good point, Migrant farm workers are a step above slavery....the grower makes the money and they live hand to mouth.

Slave owners were wrong. Slavery was all about labor at cheap costs (the cost was due to buying and feeding the slaves). It was a horrible situation. The sad thing is that we still allow farmers to cheat workers through low pay and poor working conditions. Migrant workers are only a few steps away from slavery. They are free men, but they are criminals due to the fact that they are mostly here illegally, they can't vote, they recieve poor pay, and are used to cook, clean, do gardening, manual labor...you name it. We may no longer allow slavery, but we still look the other way when the outcome brings a financial benefit ( such as those cheap vegetables at Wallmart).
