I am currently pursuing an associate degree in Hospital Pharmacy Technology. I am going to take my PTCB testing this summer. I have worked for Walgreens over seven months. I was supposed to get a Pharmacy Technician position that was going to open up when I first started, that never materialized. I am in the pharmacy one day a week if I ask enough. Their training is very minimal to say the least. I want to work somewhere that will train me to become intuitive with the pharmacy. So if anyone knows or is working somewhere that would be a good place to start a career. By the way I am in the metro Detroit area of Michigan, Thanks.

I would HIGHLY suggest you work in a hospital.

Retail pharmacy technicians (like CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc.) don't make very much compared to technicians that work in a hospital. I worked at Safeway when I was 17 as a pharmacy technician (not certified) and I only made $8.00 an hour. It was horrible!

I have been a certified pharmacy technician for almost 5 years now. I work in a hospital pharmacy and I'm the Pyxis administrator for my hospital (I'm only 21!). A Pyxis machine holds all the medications (tablets, oral suspensions, IV fluid, etc). I also make IV fluid, compound oral medication, compound ointments, dispense medication and controlled medication (narcotics) and maintain the machines (just to name a few). I make $16.70 an hour and I get a raise every year.

Good luck!

Hospitals pay pharm techs quite a bit more than the community pharmacies. If you want to make pharm tech a career, go to hospital, for in the community setting, you will rarely see a salary over $15 per hour, and that is with a lot of experience. Get your certification and more places will be willing to hire.
Since you already work in at a Walgreens, you should try and get a transfer to another store with a pharm tech opening.

Hospitals pay the most then Rehab centers then a retail store. You need to find a place that you can work the hours they need.
