I'm reading Wartime: Britain 1939-1945 by Juliet Wilson. Can anyone recommend a similar book that deals with life for the citizens of Germany during that same period? i.e. covering the themes of rationing, air-raids, conscription etc. thanks

I've looked on amazon under European history but can't find anything that specifically covers what I want. Most of the books are German military history or holocaust and I'm looking for social history really

You will find that " THE PAST IS MYSELF" by Christabel Bielenberg will give you precisely what you are looking for.
She was an English woman who married a German before the war and writes from personal experience of her life during the war. The descriptions of the air raids on Berlin are particularly good.

It was a very popular government in Germany because it was successful in accomplishing goals such as restoring the economy, and basically turning Germany from a vanquished state into a superpower in a very short period of time. Nonetheless, most conscripted men who were fighting in the Wehrmacht were mostly just fighting for their nation, and could not be said to be fanatical Nazis. The Waffen-SS was different because these men were the political soldiers of the NSDAP, they WERE more into the cause that the regular enlisted troops. To answer you question: our media portrays everything about that regime as bad. The Holocaust story also has to have it's bad guys or demons. All of this propaganda is meant to make this period of history emotional: i.e. they are moralizing, and the enemy was and still IS evil. This makes people look at the Nazis with a bias, and not objectively. Also in my opinion, it's to prevent a revival of the politics of the Nazis anywhere in the world.
