~Lake turnover is a term referring to the exchange of existing water in a lake with new water by discharging existing water while accepting new (from sources such as snow melt, rainfall and/or feeder streams). For instance, Lake Superior drains into Lake Michigan and down the line through Lake Ontario and then, finally, through the St. Lawrence to the Atlantic. The period of time it takes a lake to turn over its waters depends on the size of the lake, the volume of water contained within its shores and the volatility of its drainage systems. Thus, the turn over time for Erie and Ontario is much shorter than that for Superior and Huron.
Seasonal differences are of no consequence, as lake turnover time is dependent on the average volume of the lake and the average flow of the feeder/drainage systems. Obviously, lake levels rise in the spring and lower in the summer, but so to does the outflow, so even with these seasonal changes, the turnover rate remains constant. During a severe drought, the turnover rate will be effected if water levels drop to the point that the outflow routes are cut off. For instance, if the lake shore recedes beyond the point where a river or creek receives water from it, the stream will dry up, the lake will become stagnant and lake turnover will cease. The result will be a barren saline lake such as the Great Salt Lake or the Dead Sea. Such a drought would not be occasioned by seasonal change; such drastic variation would require a climactic anomaly.

For the turnover to occur, it is necessary that all water in a lake be discharged. This is accomplished by the first step in the process as described in the preceeding answers, but the exchange of surface water with the deeper water is only the first step in turnover.

Cooler air chills the top most layers of the water until they are colder than the water further down. This creates an unstable water column meaning that the cooler, denser water on the surface goes down deep and displaces the warmer, nutrient rich water up from the bottom. That's why lake turnover smells like @ss.

water at 4 C is denser than water at either warmer or cooler temperatures (since ice floats) so when a body of water gradually cools (like happens in lakes in autumn) through to zero, the water which reaches 4 C first drops to the bottom, and cooler or warmer water goes to the top. If it is getting cooler, then the water on top turns to ice and you get the usual skating rink. This natural stirring of the water oxygenates otherwise still water such as in lakes. It happens in the fall and also in spring. Usually in fall.

The thermocline layer has minimal mixing, and what does occur is slow, thus isolating the bottom waters from the surface zone. Because this region lies between the epilimnion and hypolimnion, it is also called the mesolimnion (meso- meaning "middle").

The hypolimnion is a deep-water stagnant layer where plants alone cannot produce enough oxygen for the layer's demands. As a result, the hypolimnion is not only depleted or devoid of oxygen, it often contains high concentrations of dissolved hydrogen sulphide and other sulphurous gases, forcing many creatures to move to shallower waters.
