There are lots of steps...it depends on what the condition is now.

I am a big fan of aerating my lawn. I have experimented with this in early summer and fall. I have come to the conclusion that timing is not that important....doing it is. I like aerating and then fertilizing within a day in the spring. Gets the fertilizer down in the ground.

Dethatching may also be required. This is best accomplished in the fall.

Fall fertilizing may be the most important time. You will really see the benefit the following spring.

Get good, deep, strong roots and they will provide you with the lushness you are looking for.

put down some weed and feed early in the year. after a few weeks put some grass seed down if you have any thin spots.
depending on where you live it will prabably take a couple seasons to get the results you want. the more grass seed you put down the thicker it will eventually become. a good thick lawn will choke off the weeds that try to grow. keep up with the fertilizer every couple of months. follow the directions on the bag and you will get good results good luck
