If the *fat* person is happy with themselves in general, they shouldn't give a care what anyone else thinks! Calling someone *fat* is a definite insult to ANYONE living in America. Or Europe. Especially where I live, S. California. You're constantly bombarded by diet pills, liposuction, programs like "Nip & Tuck", fashion magazines, (Vogue, et al) and tiny actresses and skinny people in general who live on cigarettes and coffee. It's just a cultural belief and it should be changed. To me, it's about as bad as using the "N* word. Some people are genetically predisposed to being fat, and some can't stop eating because they're stressed out and don't know of another way to cure their stress. Why can't people just accept that there are ALL shapes and sizes and it's all good? I'll pass out if THAT ever happens.

No! If someone eats a lot he/she gets FAT. Fat is how you GET by eating a lot, but it doesn't describe who the person is, it describes how the person looks! If someone smokes a lot he/she is celled an ADDICT. A smoker is a person who smokes, frequently or not. I believe calling someone FAT could be an insult depending on the tone used...or the context. If someone is FAT, he/she is FAT period! So it shouldn't be an insult if you are not using the adjective in a despective context.

Come on now really,if you were fat, Im sure you wouldn't like someone calling you fat. Its so not the same as calling a smoker a smoker. It doesn't even compare. People that are fat have very low self esteem and its really sad and thats why when someone calls them fat as if they didn't know it hurts them.

its not the same. its pretty mean and cruel and honestly smoking is not any better. I am a diabetic. i cant eat sugar. my husband is a smoker who gave me a line about how it was different for him but diabetes would kill me. well they are both just as bad and to prove my point i told him i was going to eat a candy bar every time he lit up a cigarette. if he can die slowly by his own choice so could i...... i got my point accross when i walked out of the store with a bag of candy bars leaving him in tears!

for some being fat is a bad thing, for others is ok.
maybe if I was fat and someone would cal me fat, I would feel down I guess.
and when it comes to smokers they are called smokers cos' they don't eat the cigarette.

Well, people don't like being fat and don't want it pointed out to them, they already know. It may not make sense, but that's the way it is. People are sensitvie about their weight, people aren't sensitive about smoking.

Sometimes it is.
Cause like, you could eat alot, but you might be skinnier than someone who barely eats at all.
It's only considered fat if you're overweight.
And I think they get it. Some are offended because they know it, and some aren't offended because they know it.
Some are just sensitive.

Well, if you eat a lot... you may not be fat... you may just have a fast metabolism.
Also, fat is an insult because media made it socially unexceptable...

I don't know, I never really thought about it like that. I guess it isn't really an insult.
