What they only hint at in the TV show is the massive amount of power it takes to cause something like that to work. In reality it is more power than all the power plants on the earth can produce.
Yes, is is possible in some Physics theories, but it is highly impractical.

theoretically yes but you must have antimatter to make the wormhole stable and we can't produce that at a very efficient rate yet so right now no in the future quite possibly
