Animals such as monkeys will usually eat the placenta and other bits and pieces after birth. Mum will bite through the umbilical cord. Bleeding - a bit maybe but not enough to damage the newborn.

The mother cuts it with her teeth. The cord is usually eaten by the mother, as well as the placenta.
There is a documentary on TV this next week, showing the birth of orangutans, illustrating this.

According to the site listed below: "After a birth, the mother licks the infant clean, bites off the umbilical cord and eats the afterbirth. "

Hi. Most tissue expelled at birth is consumed. The cord should be no exception.

The logical answer is that the mother eats it like any other animals like cats and dogs. They don't leave any mess around after birth and perhaps we should learn something from them!!

The mother will either bite it off or it will detach when the placenta comes out and the mother will eat it.

I believe it is detached by itself. There is no tying. The linked website suggests that other females in proximity help with cleaning up.

I guess with most animals it just gets chewed off. And then the stump will just dry up and drop off.
