Boric acid.
You might want to find out what kind of ants they are. Carpenter ants are big, and half red/half black. They eat the wood in your home.
Sugar ants can be a pain and they require little baits ... if you break up the line they travel in with boric acid or something they'll just start going a different way. They're teeny black ants. You absolutely can't leave any food out at all with those guys.

I use an ant block product that you sprinkle around the perimeter of your house. Works on a number of varieties of ants - available at Lowes,Home Depot, etc. The brand I use I think is Andro.

Clean, clean, clean. No food, no ants. Spray insect killer at threshold entrances too.
