I work as a receptionist at a law firm. I see that on Fridays everyone wears jeans although the bosses never said it's okay to wear them. One day I asked my boss if I can wear them and she explained very nicely that if she allowed me to wear them, it would not be fair to my co-workers. After a few months of noticing everyone wearing them on Fridays, I've begun to as well. I decided it's not fair to me. She sees everyone else and doesn't say anything, and so she shouldn't to me either. And she hasn't so far. (I've done this 3x)
I dont want to bring it up at a meeting to have it officially ok-ed, b/c she will most likely say no once it is brought up and then everyone will hate me for it.
Also, for me it's a little different since I am the receptionist and my desk is the kind where you can see my legs when you are walking towards the door and coming in.
Should I just continue on as things are until she says something or no? What do you think?

My jeans are so far from sloppy, you have no idea. I dont wear the comfy weekend kind with holes in them in case you're wondering. They are very high quality and still worn with heels and blazers.

Since you are the receptionist I would advise against it. Your bosses might be passive aggressive and not say anything to your face but secretly be annoyed and their annoyance might come out in other ways, say in a performance review. I think it's much more comfortable to sit all day in dress pants anyway!

I would bring it up. its not fair that others can wear jeans and you cannot. arent you all a team? if they get mad, so what? they should have known better. besides no one does major work on Fridays either. if like you say you keep the jeans looking presentable (I recommend paired with a polo button down shirt and flats) then no one should have a hugh problem, not even the boss

but talk to her before you wear them, first impression is important and you represent the company

If you are visible to visitors and clients then you have to ask yourself, "What kind of image do I want to give these people, bearing in mind that I am the first impression they are going to get about my firm?"

If you don't give a rat's behind about that, maybe you need to find another workplace; one where attire is meaningless because nobody except co-workers is ever gonna see it.

what i dont understand is why your boss is "allowing" others to wear them , but when you ask, says "no".

i would personally continue to abide by the dress code. but if it continues to bother you, tell your boss that you dont think that it is fair everyone else wears jeans and you cannot. does your boss wear jeans to work?

the best thing is to abide by the dress code if you want to keep your job....but i understand being frustrated by this "double standard".

good luck!

Depends on whether you want to keep your job or not.
