what if the color existed before someone discovered the fruit? Maybe the fruit was called orange because of the color.

I suppose...it follows the same model of the chicken-or-egg dilemma. Did we call oranges oranges because they're orange or did we call the color orange orange because that's the color of the fruit? It just depends on which came first.

I don't know make up something cool to call it... :D

The fruit has nothing to do with the color, unless they are clones in different category. I would have called it unique if it wasn't for the orange.

Well, the word comes from the fruit (Naranj in Sanskrit which became naranjah in Arabic and then eventually naranja in Spanish and then the English changed it to narange. Over time the N was dropped and the a replaced with an o)

I think what you are really asking is which came first ...
Interestingly, English is not the only language which has the same word for the fruit and for the color ...
Conspiracy of sorts ? :-)
You could ask, why we don't call "yellow" "banana" ...
and I have absolutely no idea!

yes.. and what would we have called read if apples weren't a fruit as well ? .. Who invented the names for colors anyways? .. I wish I knew .
