you don't stop rumors. they are like feathers scattered to the wind. you can't possibly stop them nor bring them back.

as for the people who now think you are not a nice person, people who are willing to believe a lie will always be willing to assume the worst.

to prevent the problem in the future:

make sure your personal character is totally above reproach.

do not affiliate or associate yourself with people of low reputation and action

live your life honestly and above board. rise above the suspicions of others by conducting yourself in such a way that they will NOT believe the lies.

refuse to sanction, condone or participate in anything that could stain your reputation, diminish your integrity or reveal some element of dishonesty in yourself.

George Washington Carver had "Eight Cardinal Virtues" for the students he taught at Tuskeegee University. If you live by them, you will rise above the gossip and leave the naysayers marinating in their own filth.

Eight cardinal virtues:

1. Be clean both inside and out.

2. Be a person who neither looks up to the rich nor down on the poor.

3. Be a person who loses, if need be, without squealing.

4. Be a person who wins without bragging.

5. Be a person who is always considerate of women, children and old people.

6. Be a person who is too brave to lie.

7. Be a person who is too generous to cheat. (or steal)

8. Be a person who takes his share of the world and lets others have theirs.

Good Luck!

I'm sorry. I don't think you can. But, there's one thing about it: This will sure help you sort out the "real people" from the flakes! Good friends don't go by rumors. Now you know right from the start who's solid and who isn't! And incidenally, you're in great company! Jesus Christ had the same problem!
