Or perhaps is it the opposite, our constant search for enjoyment, has it destroyed our civilization. It has been argued that this is what happened to ancient Rome, they got so involved in the pursuit of happiness that they forgot to maintain their empire.

I am quite addicted to having some control over my life, and knowing I am not likely to have to fight coyotes for food. However, the pursuit of money certainly drains a person. It is not impossible to regress to a simpler lifestyle, but others make it difficult. Keeping up with the Joneses can hook even the most non-materialistic... ...and it's difficult to find somewhere to live if everywhere to live costs a 6-figure sum. Civilisation doesn't trap us - money and possessions do - and civilisation is more than just cash and gadgets. There is enough in this world for everyone to live in a civilised way without feeling trapped and drained. Greed and lousy telly shows about vacuous celebrities are two of the biggest barriers.

Years ago they had brutal wars and men fought in rings to please kings who wanted to see blood and hear screams of men. Poor were thrown off clifts so the rich class could be entertained by the death screams.
They had 900 wives while the average guy got nothing.
They barely eicked out a living. In Ireland a poor working man lived on one potatoe a day. Barely kept him alive until the ripe old age of 30. We have it better than kings did years ago. Justice was only for the rich and slaves were of very little value. I wouldn't want to go back one minute. Look back at the crueltys done in the 1950's even. To minorities.
Hopefully we will learn to be better persons who care about the poor and disadvantaged. Christians were at the head of the line in persacuting the poor and the owning of slaves.
The more we get away from Christians the kinder we get.
Look now at the group that is suposed to be religious?
Do they want to help the poor? NO, they rob from the poor for the richest people's advantage.

i'm specific the Founding Fathers and mothers does not be amused. The imperialism of the Spanish-American conflict, the Federal Reserve economic business enterprise, the help for suitable-wing protection tension dictatorships international - my god they could be aghast! The pointless conflict of aggression in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The controlled demolition of the twin Towers, and worldwide commerce center 7, the invasion and profession of Iraq and Afghanistan in a sham "conflict of Terror." no longer basically are the Founding Fathers and mothers spinning of their graves - they have already chosen a impartial united states to get rid of their grave websites to and prepare for citizenship!!

Since we are supposed to be in charge of our lives, what has civilization got to do with our enjoyment level. You can enjoy or not. It has to do with the personal you. I enjoy waking up every morning. A hot cup of coffee, a beautiful sunrise, maybe rain. My dogs wanting breakfast. Having a day to deal with. Life is, enjoy, or not. Really up to you.

Blame the intellectuals dude! If it wasn't for the top percentile we wouldn't be encumbered with all these material goods and inventions.

If everyone in the world was as stupid as I am we would still be swinging from the trees and hitting each other with clubs

Sounds good, eh!
